Ten Spots in Zamboanga City That You Can Visit For Almost Nothing

I've lived in Zamboanga City for most of my life, but I haven't really gotten around to viewing the sights and sounds. Thinking back, I used to just hop on my motorcycle and ride through the still undeveloped parts of Pasonanca and Lunzuran. The unpaved, dusty roads and unexplored areas excited me. When I went to visit those areas again, it wasn't what I expected. I, for one, never expected that people would actually start to live in those uneven patches of land.

So, for the past week, I went on a mission to find Zamboanga. Zamboanga has gotten so much bad rap the past few years that I think people have started to forget that Zamboanga isn't all that bad. If it was so bad, the population would have already dropped.

I went to find ten places in Zamboanga City where you don't have to actually splurge to have a good time, or appreciate Zamboanga City.

1. Abong-Abong Park
Catholic devotees visit this point during the Holy Week to observe the holiday. It's right by Mount Pulong Bato, the volcano that was formed by magma pushing underneath the Earth's surface. Unlike the other mountains surrounding it, Mount Pulong Bato is made out of solid rock.

2. Climaco Freedom Park
Also known as the final resting place of Mayor Cesar C. Climaco, the two cannons and a soldier's helmet on the site seems to be asking to have their picture taken.

3. Paseo del Mar
Zamboangenos love coming to this place. It's a great place to kill time and watch the sunset.

4. Zamboanga City Hall
The Spaniards once ruled the Philippines with Zamboanga City as their main base, hence the Spanish-themed building.

5. Pasonanca Park
Better known as the Boy Scout Camp locally, I really enjoyed coming here when I was younger. I don't think it's been used for actual camping in a very long while, judging from how perfect the grass was.

6. Jimmy's Satti Haus
Everybody knows you have to have some Satti from Jimmy's when coming to Zamboanga. Well, there are other places to get Satti from in Zamboanga, but this seems to be the closest one to the pueblo.

7. Fort Pilar Shrine
Just a few minutes away from the Satti Haus, light up some candles or attend a mass. Or you can also feed the doves at Plaza del Pilar, which is just a stone's throw away from here. Here's a clear shot of the Shrine.
8. Canelar Barter Trade Center
Imported goods at great prices! Haggle to your heart's content. Just make sure to be reasonable, though.

9. Knickerbocker, Paseo del Mar
This place never runs out of customers. Frankly because of a particular dessert that Zamboanguenos can't seem to get enough of.

10. Yakan Village
Home to the Yakan people, the Mindanaoan culture thrives here. Wonderful colors of pattern and tradition will greet you once you arrive.

I guess I went a little hyper and ended up sharing them in real-time, which is something that I never really practised in the past. Going around town using mobile data used to be pretty costly. Now that Globe Prepaid's finally gotten around to promoting GoUnli20Plus, sharing has definitely become easier. I get to surf for up to 20MB worth of data, without having to hook up to a wifi connection anymore. The boyfriend's pretty happy too, because I get to have unlimited calls to Globe and TM, plus 50 texts to all networks.

All for PhP 20.00. Not bad of a deal, eh? And since I only get to have 50 texts, I'll just call whoever I need to call and then text everyone else who isn't using the same network as I. To register, just text GoUnli20Plus to 2655 using your Globe Prepaid sim.
