Korokke / Japanese Croquettes

It's been a while since I posted anything that I actually cooked. If I can just afford to cook all the time, I'd probably be posting everyday. But that's not the case. I'm sort of an anime junkie, and about a few months ago, I got into reading the manga Beelzebub too much and even watched the anime until I got to the latest episode.

And one thing that stuck to me was the main character was always eating Croquettes, or Korokke, as the Japanese called it.

The first time I made the recipe, people on my Facebook friends list have been asking for a taste, but seeing as I can't afford to feed the lot of them, I thought I'd post how I made it, that way they can always make it on their own.

Forgive me for the poor lighting on step 8. The power went out while I was doing it.

Recipe after the jump.

Korokke
Makes 16 normal-shaped ones and 1 little ball

Ingredients:

1 large white onion
4 large potatoes
A quarter kilo of quality ground beef
Salt
Ground pepper
Butter-flavored margarine
Flour
3 large eggs
Japanese-style bread crumbs

1. Wash and peel potatoes. Cut in small portions and boil in a large pot.

2. Drain water from potatoes. After draining, put pot back on stove and get the potatoes as dry as possible, but be careful not to burn the potatoes.

3. Mash potatoes in a large bowl, season with salt and pepper and add a tablespoon of butter-flavored margarine.

4. Mince white onion.

5. Saute onion and cook ground beef. Break the chunks with a wooden spoon. Drain any meat juice from the pot and let cool. To get that nice croquette shape, you would want them dry.

6. Mix cooked meat with mashed potatoes thoroughly.

7. Shape croquettes like so.

8. Dredge croquettes in flour, egg and bread crumbs.

9. Deep fry croquettes. They're already cooked, so you just want to fry them enough to get that nice golden brown color.

I hope you enjoyed this recipe! Don't forget to drop me a comment or let me know how it turned out for you.

    1. Thanks for dropping by! Yup, it's not really a Chinese recipe, but making balls out of them are great with kids. :)
