Running the 5k Marathon

This is one of the things that I have been preparing my legs and lungs for for the past few weeks. The PhilHealth National Fun Run. For the moment, I can call myself a recreational runner, but I'm hoping that by the next year, I might actually stand a chance in winning a marathon or getting a good time worthy enough to be recorded.

I was up as early as 4AM just so I can get something warm in my stomach. An oatmeal porridge in a cup was the best thing I can have before a run. Apparently, oats slowly release energy so you don't easily run out of gas while running.

When I got to the track, I couldn't find the guys I'm supposed to be with. It took about ten minutes of waiting and texting before we managed to find each other. I'd tell the guys I was under the basketball hoop close to the stairs, and they'd say they were at the same place. Turns out, they were at the opposite end of the court.

I got lucky and found the 5k holding area without even knowing there was a holding area. This marathon's better organized than the first one I was on. They even got big screens set up and they even got the guys at the Grandstand to turn on the bleacher lights. The Grandstand is currently under renovation and only the sports activity areas are supposed to be open to the public. The Electrical system is not even supposed to be used yet since the turn over from the contractor has not been acknowledged yet.

It's warm up time. The basic exercises were easy, but holy C**P, I didn't think there would be actual DANCING. I was like, "No way.". I started taking pictures instead. Anyone see some familiar faces yet? But look, we got a new kid in the group. So there's Roy, Raymond, Jayson and Iann.

Roy and I ran and walked the marathon together since we basically have the same pace. Raymond and Jayson can't run as much as Roy and I, so they resorted to walking most of the race. Iann, however, even if he never got to practice run with us, nor at all, managed to run ahead of us. Poor Roy was used to strength running and not to endurance running, while I was the opposite. If you can remember this entry, only Roy was able to run longer than any of us uphill. I had to quit to make sure I don't injure myself for pushing too hard. His side started to hurt before we were even halfway done with the race, so we had to take it slow. He could barely push himself through ten seconds of running later on.

After the race, we gathered and found a few more friends.

Never mind the big face
We missed one person, because right after the race, he went off to see his waiting girlfriend. She came to the venue with him, but didn't run in the race. We had breakfast, then went on a short trip to the beach after. But, that's for another entry.
